According to researchers at Cambridge University, genetic mutations may reduce the risk of a person developing diabetes . Linked in with breaking news that type 1 diabetes could be caused by a virus, the team identified genetic mutations in antiviral responses.
The discoveries could prompt the invention of new treatment and prevention pathways. The first author of the study, Sergey Nejentsev, reportedly commented: "Not only has this proved that the gene IFIH1 is involved in type one diabetes, it also gave us clues to understand the mechanism."
The research was conducted at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Wellcome Trust diabetes laboratory. Senior author of the study, Professor John Todd, reportedly commented: Now we and others can begin to study the biology of IFIH1 in the context of type one diabetes knowing that it is part of the cause of the disease."
