According to recent research in America, Alzheimers disease and diabetes are extremely closely related. A link between the two conditions has long been suspected, but according to recent reports brain damage may start even before a person is diagnosed with diabetes .
Scientists are seeing a blurring of the border between vascular dementia and Alzheimers disease .
One Alzheimer’s specialist at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Yaakov Stern, reportedly commented: "Right now, we can't do much about the Alzheimer's disease pathology, if you could control these vascular conditions, you might slow the course of the disease."
However, the association does not affect everyone. Dr. Ralph Nixon of New York University reportedly commented: "It by no means means that you're going to develop Alzheimer's disease, and certainly many people with Alzheimer's don't have diabetes ."
