According to diabetes news reports this morning, from 2011 the units in which blood glucose levels are measured will be changed when it comes to HbA1c testing. HbA1c, from the end of May 2011, will be given in millimoles per mol (mmol/mol) rather than being expressed as a percentage.
HbA1c tests measure blood glucose levels over a period of two to three months. The HbA1c target is below 6.5 per cent for most people with diabetes . The test will remain the same, but the new way of reporting results will allow people with diabetes to compare readings from different laboratories and research trials across the globe.
For people with diabetes who are wondering about the two methods of reading, HbAlc levels of 6.5 per cent are expressed as 48 mmol/mol. From June onwards, all HbA1c results in the UK will be provided as both a percentage and an mmol/mol reading from June 2009 until May 2011.
