According to an adviser to the Department of Health, diabetes screening could be delayed for another four years, leading to greater health inequalities throughout the UK.
Eventually, the DoH is seeking nationwide screening for every patient aged between 40-74 under a large-scale vascular checks programme to increase early diabetes diagnosis .
Professor Kamlesh Khunti spoke out at the Diabetes UK annual conference in Glasgow. It seems that screening checks will not be added until 2013. He reportedly commented: " GPs will be incentivised under LESs, but the use of LESs may lead to inequalities."
With more funding due later this decade, direct interventions for diabetes will be made easier, other experts said. Early screening can help catch diabetes at a pre-diabetes stage and help to avoid diabetes complications later in life.
