Over five years ago, a research team at the Baylor College of Medicine Laboratory learned how to cure mice of type 1 diabetes using stem cells . The technology, Dr. Chan says, is right there.
Chan, who is director of the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center at BCM reportedly commented: "Now we know how it works. The answer is adult stem cells ."
Dr. Yechoor, an assistant professor o medicine-endocrinology and the first author of the report was quoted in the news as saying. "The mice responded within a week." Using a detailed process involving stem cells, the team found a way to create active insulin -producing cells in the liver.
Chan reportedly concluded: "The concept is important because we can induce normal adult stem cells to acquire a new cell fate. It might even be applicable to regenerating other organs or tissues using a different gene from other types of adult stem cells."
