According to international health news reports, fears regarding swine flu are diverting attention from other diseases that badly need addressing. Cancer and diabetes groups have gone on record as saying non-communicable diseases that affect millions of people each year deserve greater attention.
Other disease workers, including those fighting Chagas disease, hepatitis and malaria joined the chorus that are claiming swine flu has knocked other diseases off the agenda.
A spokesman for the WHO, Thomas Abraham, made it clear that swine flu is not taking up a huge amount of resources or discussion, and that other WHO programs will not be affected by the need to combat the pandemic.
A statement released by the International Diabetes Federation reportedly said: " Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases cause 60 percent of all deaths worldwide."
