According to recent research conducted by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly, and reported in Diabetes Care, type 2 diabetes significantly increases the risk of developing acute pancreatitis and biliary disease.

The research, conducted in San Diego, California, showed that those with type 2 diabetes faced a three times greater risk of the former, and a two times greater risk of the latter condition when compared to people without diabetes .

Dr. Bloomgren, lead author was reported as commenting: "The increased risk of pancreatitis for patients with type 2 diabetes...combined with the increasing prevalence of diabetes and the associated risk factors, may be contributing to a meaningful increase in the incidence of acute pancreatitis in the US."

To reach the conclusion the researchers studied a database of over a million adults.
