According to a report at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the number of people with diabetes in the UK has leaped by 145,000 in the past year. Some 90% of this diabetic population has type 2 diabetes, which is linked to a lack of exercise, unhealthy diets and obesity .
Spokesman for the Vita obesity clinics, Professor Nick Finer, reportedly commented: " Type 2 diabetes management is long term, but when linked to severe obesity, there are treatment options that could not only put type 2 diabetes into remission but bring those with a BMI of over 35 into a healthy weight category that can be sustained."
According to Department of Health statistics, 58% of type 2 diabetes incidences occur due to excess body weight, and the risks increase as people become more overweight and obese.
