Diabetes screening survey in India

A house-to-house survey is being conducted in India as part of a wider diabetes control programme. The project has been set up by the Goan Health Ministry and the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation in Bangalore. The initiative has already covered a population of 60.035 in three different villages.

Satish Barde, the NNEF Project Manager, was reported as saying: "The 2,660 people with blood sugar problems have been referred to health centres for further investigation and management. Random blood sampling (RBS) of 4,453 people with a family history of diabetes or suffering from diabetes has also been undertaken."

The project has trained some 400 local workers to understand diabetes and diabetes complications . Barde reportedly said: "So far we have conducted practical training camps for medical professionals. We also undertake programmes for improving treatment with focus on reducing complications related to diabetes and working towards making Goa free from diabetes-related amputations, blindness, nephropathy and other complications."
