According to reports in diabetes news today, China sees 115 new cases of diabetes every hour. Scientists and doctors made the declaration at the 13th Annual Conference of the Chinese Diabetes Society in Zhengzhou, Henan province.
China has the second largest diabetic population in the world, with around 41 million people with diabetes . The average age of people with type 2 diabetes in Chine is much younger that in the west, according to research conducted by the International Diabetes Federation .
People of Asian origin face greater diabetes risk due to a lower secretion of insulin, but Chinese diabetes experts also blamed high calorie diets and sedentary lifestyles for the ongoing diabetes population increase in China.
With 23 per cent of Chinese people considered overweight in 2002, 28 times the number in 1985, obesity is a major factor feeding the type 2 diabetes population. For World Diabetes Day this weekend, a series of events are being held to raise awareness of the disease.
