According to diabetes news reports today, the number of cases diagnosed with diabetes has climbed by over 145,000 per annum. The data, reported by GP practices from around the country, places the diabetic population of the UK at around 2.6 million people.
Furthermore, over 5.2 million people are now registered as being clinically obese. The statistics mean that out of the total UK population, one in ten people has obesity and around one in twenty now has diabetes . The figures were unearthed by leading diabetes charity, Diabetes UK .
The chief executive of the charity, Douglas Smallwood, was reported in diabetes news as commenting: "These latest figures are extremely worrying. Diabetes is a serious condition that causes heart disease, stroke, amputations, kidney failure and , blindness and more deaths than breast and prostate cancer combined."
