According to diabetes news today, health bosses hope that new specialist diabetes services will help the National Health Service to save thousands of pounds. Specialist diabetes services are being opened in some areas of the country, with Ilkeston and Long Eaton seeing new services offered this week.
Local news claims that diabetes has risen by 8% in Derbyshire, and the new diabetes services will help patients with diabetes to get check-ups closer to home. According to NHS data, missed appointments cost the NHS in Derby around 135,000 pounds last year.
Peter Shorrick of Diabetes UK East Midlands was reported in diabetes news as commenting: "These latest figures are extremely worrying. Diabetes is a serious condition that causes heart disease, stroke, amputations, kidney failure and blindness, and more deaths than breast and prostate cancer combined."
