The Scottish-Norwegian diabetes diagnosis manufacturer Axis-Shield will make their diabetes testing system international, under new plans that could make diagnostics for people with diabetes more simple and effective all over the world.
The company has agreed to develop and commercialise their test that monitors long-term blood glucose control amongst diabetics . The technology is already available through Abbott and in-house systems.
The chief executive of Axis-Shield, Ian Gilham, reportedly commented: "With the addition of Abbott’s Architect system coupled with the increasing number of individuals with diabetes, we expect to grow significantly. At the moment, diabetes patients are given the HbA1c test three or four times to test their glucose levels over the previous three months. But if the test moves into a general screening situation for people considered to be at risk of diabetes, then that will have a substantial impact on our revenues."
