According to a study in Sweden, breast milk could be healthy for adults as well as babies. Breast milk could reportedly be useful as a treatment for conditions including cancer, diarrhoea and diabetes .
A Swedish team at Gothenburg University found that the antibiotic properties of breast milk after realising that cancerous cells died on contact with it. The research team then made a compound called HAMLET. Breast milk appears to protect babies from a variety of illnesses and could have a future in patient care.
Although there is plenty of breast milk in British milk banks, they are unable to supply it to adults, according to Gillian Weaver of the UK Association of Milk Banking, despite its potential in diabetes treatment . This is partly due to a lack of clinical research, but also because milk banks are not funded for this.
