According to several leading charities, the majority of people in the UK are unaware that their beer bellies could lead to major risks of developing dangerous diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease .
According to recent research in Wales, 96 per cent of people are unaware that beer bellies and muffin tops are responsible for higher levels of chemicals that increase the risk of serious diseases. Over two-thirds of people surveyed in Wales were aware that they had excess body fat .
The news is part of a campaign by Diabetes UK, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. The goal is to raise awareness of the diseases and the risk of being overweight.
Associate medical director for the BHF, Dr. Mike Knapton, reportedly commented: "That harmless spare tyre around your waist is actually a major health hazard. While you might be relaxing at home, your fat cells are working overtime to pump out excess hormones and other chemicals that can cause disease. Wrapping a tape measure around your middle takes just a few seconds, but it could be your vital first step towards a healthier a future."
