Diabetes news indicates that by taking a diabetes drug or vitamin E the coruse of fatty liver disease could be reversed. Fatty liver disease can cause major health complications and is often associated with obesity, according to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine .
For those people that are prone to getting the condition, which can escalate into cirrhosis and irreversible liver damage over time, the news is good. The patient often gets no symptoms.
The study indicates that vitamin E and the diabetes drug pioglitazone could benefit people who have the condition. This fact is known amongst some doctors, who prescribe the diabetic drug off-label in some instances.
An endocrinologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Kenneth Cusi, reportedly commented: “This confirms a long-term benefit for pioglitazone and gives an alternative option.”
