According to recent clinical research, stopping smoking quickly could increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 6 years. Experts have attributed this to the weight gain that happens when people give up smoking, and have called for more advice for prospective patients.
Head of research on the study, Hsion-Chieh Yeh, reportedly commented: "If you smoke, give it up. That's the right thing to do. But people have to also watch their weight ." The study involved some 11,000 subjects over a 17 year span and took place at the John Hopkins University.
Diabetes UK care advisor Natasha Marsland reportedly commented: "On no account should people use the theoretical results of this study as an excuse not to give up smoking. The health benefits of giving up smoking far outweigh the risk of developing type 2 diabetes from modest, short-term weight gain."
