Alexandra Burke, and X-Factor contestant turned star, has caught the attention of the nation by revealing her diabetes fears. The singer, who looks in perfect physical shape, admitted to reporters that she has constant concerns for her health . Diabetes runs in her family, and her grandmother even died from diabetes-related complications .
The 21-year old celebrity, who is nominated for a Brit award, is worried that type 2 diabetes may affect her life. As well as her grandmother and great-grandmother, Alexandra’s mother Melissa Bell (of Soul II Soul fame) suffered kidney failure due to her diabetes and is now undergoing dialysis.
Type 2 diabetes is increasingly common in the UK, and a first degree relative (such as a brother, sister, child or parent) with diabetes increases risks. Other major risk factors include impaired glucose tolerance and being overweight. Alexandra is taking action against her diabetes by employing a personal trainer and paying close attention to what she eats and drinks.
