According to reports from the Midlands, diabetes is a time-bomb for the South Asian Community. BBC Inside Out West Midlands reported that one in four kidney dialysis patients in Birmingham are South Asian, presumably many affect by kidney disease, often a complication of diabetes .
Experts predict that more and more young people will be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, a disease that is strongly linked with Western diet and low levels of exercise . If nothing is done to stem the tide amongst South Asian diabetics, the epidemic could become a pandemic.
Dr. Wadim Hanif of the South Asian Health Foundation and Heartlands Hospital was reported as saying: "What we are talking about today is an epidemic which can soon turn into a pandemic if we don't do anything about it. If you're a South Asian between the ages of 25 and 75, the prevalence of diabetes is now about 20%. This is compared to about 4% in the whole community so… the risk of having diabetes is at least five times greater."
