Over 50 per cent of people in Bangladesh unaware of diabetes

Mon, 08 Feb 2010
51 per cent of people in Bangladesh are unaware that diabetes exists. The lack of knowledge highlights the major health problems faced by people in Bangladesh, and the immense knowledge gap that needs to be filled to increase diabetes awareness in the country.

The diabetes statistic was revealed at a seminar about chronic kidney diseases in Bangladesh. Some 20 million people in Bangladesh are suffering from chronic kidney disease, with as many as 40,000 dying due to kidney failure each year. The extent of the kidney disease epidemic comes from various sources, including high diabetes rates, high blood pressure rates and genetic factors. As well as the lack of diabetes awareness, some 65 per cent are unaware of high blood pressure.

Kidney disease is one of the most serious diabetes complications . However, it has very few symptoms and often people do not visit the doctor until it is too late. Like diabetes management, preventing kidney disease is a matter of regular exercise and a healthy diet .
