A report by Diabetes UK indicates that some 50,000 people in Wales may be unaware of their type 2 diabetes . The report covered a much broader trend, with some 56% of people diagnosed with diabetes last year unaware that they had the condition. The majority of those diagnosed are done so by accident, the report commented.
Diabetes UK Cymru made it clear that thousands of people in Wales have the condition but do not yet know. Unfortunately, the type 2 diabetes population in Wales is likely to increase, due to growing obesity problems, less active lifestyles and bad diets.
The national director of Diabetes UK Cymru, Dai Williams, reportedly commented: "We need to make sure that people are aware of the risk factors and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes . We need to encourage them to ask for a diabetes test if they are at risk of developing the condition. Diabetes awareness is key if we want to prevent people from facing a future of ill health. Being diagnosed early means that you are less likely to develop the serious complications of diabetes."
