Diabetes risk increased by giving up smoking

Tue, 05 Jan 2010
A recent study indicates that those people who give up smoking could dramatically increase their risk of developing type 2 diabetes . The subsequent weight gain piled on by many of those that quite smoking could raise type 2 diabetes risks – but is this worse than the associated health benefits?

The research was conducted by experts at the John Hopkins University in America. Those people that kicked the habit faced a 70% likelihood of developing the condition in the six years following. The research studied over 11,000 adults.

However, Diabetes UK had a stern warning. Natasha Marsland was reported as commenting: "On no account should people use the theoretical results of this study as an excuse not to give up smoking ."
