Teenager with diabetes raises money for hospital

Sophie Washington, 14, who has suffered from a complex form of type 1 diabetes for the last five years, has managed to raise thousands of pounds for a hospital in Stevenage where she was treated for much of last year. Sophie spent a lot of time at the Lister Hospital last year, where she was admitted during a spate of diabetic emergencies.

Although her own health was deteriorating rapidly, she was able to raise GBP6,000 through a campaign to purchase constant glucose monitoring equipment (CGM) for Lister, as well as for the QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City. She raised the money by making cakes, and from fundraising from a variety of individuals and community groups.

Lister’s Bluebell Children’s Ward has also benefited from Sophie’s good work, receiving GBP1,000 to buy new outdoor toys, a guinea pig hutch and the redecoration of the staff room as a way of thanking staff at the hospital who looked after her. Sophie has also received support from local businesses to help with the refurbishment.

Sophie’s mother, Lisa, said "Sophie is a wonderful girl who, despite the huge difficulties she faces, always remains positive and looks to help others. She is a role model for young people everywhere and an inspiration to all who know and love her."
