The American public will be alerted to how serious diabetes is coming, particularly when the condition is left undiagnosed or not properly treated. The 22nd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day will be held this year on march 23rd, the fourth Tuesday of the month.
Diabetes Alert Day aims to highlight the shocking explosion in diabetes population in the US, where some 24 million children and adults are affected. Of this number, some 5.7 million people are unaware that they are suffering from diabetes . Diagnosis often occurs up to a decade after the onset of the disease, leading to greater risks of complications including stroke, blindness and heart disease .
Diabetes Alert Day will aim to spread knowledge about the risk factors of type 2 diabetes . These include being overweight or inactive, being over the age of 45 increases risk, and many different ethnicities face a greater than average risk of diabetes development .
