According to diabetes research, the risk of death following cancer surgery goes up for people with diabetes . A research team conducted meta-analysis and found that people with diabetes face a 50 per cent greater likelihood of death after cancer surgery. Results of the study were published in the journal Diabetes Care .
Diabetes and cancer have been linked for some time, although the relationship between the two conditions is complicated. One of the lead authors of the study, Hsin-Chieh Yeh, was reported as commenting: "We already know that diabetes appears to increase the risk for some cancers. This study shows that having pre-existing diabetes also increases the chance of post-operative mortality in newly diagnosed cancer patients."
Diabetes is well known to increase the risk of infection and other complications after surgery. Yeh highlighted the importance of managing diabetes in light of cancer surgery.
