According to recent diabetes news, the Federal Government in Australia has announced a new multi-million dollar program to encourage patients with diabetes to sign up with a single doctor for an ongoing care plan . The move is part of a health reform agenda for diabetes care in America .
Each practice will work with patients to create a personalised care plan, as well as liaising with other health providers including dieticians and physiotherapists. The GP practices will then be paid per patient per annum for care and services .
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was reported as commenting: "These reforms mark the beginning of a new way of treating Australians with long term illness. " Diabetes is an emerging problem in Australia, where there are around 240,000 diabetes related hospital admissions every year.
