Asian Pacific Americans face greater diabetes risk

The American Diabetes Association, the leading US diabetes nonprofit, has made it clear that some ethnic groups face a greater risk of developing diabetes . For those in the high risk groups, such as Asian Pacific Americans, type 2 diabetes symptoms should be closely watched and pre-diabetes should be avoided wherever possible.

Type 1 diabetes affects a far smaller proportion of the population, and is not so ethno-specific in terms of risk. Most diabetics have type 2 diabetes, which is usually diagnosed in adults. Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed amongst adults, and causes the pancreas to produce inadequate amounts of insulin .

The ADA are working to closely connect with diabetics of different ethnic groups. The upcoming Diabetes Expo in Seattle will seek to bring together a range of diabetes information. Featuring 80 vendors and offering free screenings, the expo highlights diabetes education .
