The sweetener fructose could have a major role to play in increasing rates of childhood obesity and diabetes, according to recent research from University of California – David. The diabetes research was published in the journal of clinical investigation.
Fructose is a naturally occurring fruit sugar found often in fruits and vegetables, which makes up as much as five or ten per cent of most fruit. However, scientists have been manufacturing a syrup split between fructose and glucose, known as high fructose corn syrup.
Under a clinical trial, those that consumed fructose gained more weight . Head researcher Kimber Stanhope reportedly commented: “This is the first evidence we have that fructose increases diabetes and heart disease independently from causing simple weight gain . We didn’t see any of these changes in the people eating glucose.”
