Research into the benefits of natural dietary supplements for treating high blood glucose levels has found that two supplements available in the United States, Sugar Crush and Sugar Crush Daily, were effective in lowering levels in patients with type 2 diabetes .
The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition and Dietary Supplements, monitored how well biologically active supplements such as fenugreek, fennel, cinnamon, olive and sage and other ingredients were able to reduce blood glucose levels. It screened 154 patients for type 2 diabetes and poor glycaemic control from June 2008 to July 2009, assessing patients for a six-month period involving a placebo phase followed by 14 weeks where they were given active supplements before being observed.
The participants then went back to active supplement use for another three weeks, with their fasting blood glucose levels being tested every week throughout the study. After seven weeks of supplement use, fasting blood glucose levels had been reduced by 47 per cent as compared to the baseline reading, and by 59 per cent by week 17. Between weeks 18 and 20, when no placebo or supplements were taken, blood glucose levels did not go down.
The research team revealed that the new biologically active dietary supplements were effective in lowering blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients with no apparent side effects .
