A new app has been developed for the iPhone and iPod that offers a way for teenagers with type 1 diabetes, to manage their condition. The app, called DiaPETic, aims to make life easier for busy teenagers with diabetes who have to test their glucose levels every day, as well as tracking them and making sure they have a healthy diet .
Designed by Emily A. Elle, the app offer the user the option of creating an avatar that helps encourage them to test their glucose levels, and provides advice on managing their diabetes . Users can also unlock certain items, and gain points that can be changed for accessories for customising their avatar.
The app comes as the latest in a range of new technology to help diabetics improve their condition, including a portable insulin-delivery gadget that can be carried in your a pocket or on a neck chain and a new early-stage wearable artificial pancreas that offers tubeless insulin pumping and continuous glucose monitoring .
Other recent diabetes apps for children have included MiniMed’s Carb Counting with Lenny, which can be downloaded for free, providing a nutrition guide and interactive games that reinforce the need for a healthy diet, and the Visiting Nurse Service app for smartphones, that tracks factors such as diet and exercise, passing the information to a healthcare professional.
