Campaign to raise awareness of diabetes in Wales

The charity Diabetes UK Cymru has launched a campaign to boost awareness about diabetes in Wales, where almost one in 20 people have been diagnosed with the disease. The charity have stated there are over 153,000 people in the country with the condition, and that a further 66,000 people could have it but be unaware of the fact.
They have launched a poster campaign to help people recognise the common signs of diabetes, which they are sending out to all surgeries and pharmacies in Wales in a bid to encourage those with symptoms to have a check up by their GP or practice nurse .
About 90 per cent of all those with diabetes have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, where body is not able to produce enough insulin or properly use the insulin it does make. The symptoms of type 2 diabetes take a while to develop, and there are concerns that there may be over a million people in the UK that do not know they are living with the condition.
There are a range of symptoms of diabetes, such as extreme tiredness, blurred vision, unexplained weight loss, increased thirst and slow healing of cuts and wounds, while complications can include heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, retina damage and problems with the feet .
