The Better Hearing Institute (BHI) in the United States has issued a warning to people who suffer from diabetes about the need to be more aware of their hearing, and recommends that screening for hearing problems should become a routine test.
The not-for-profit organisation is recommending that all Americans should have a diabetes risk test to assess any problems, and has also alerted people to the Across America Hearing Challenge that takes place during the American Diabetes Association Alert Day next week (March 22).
The move comes as new research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which has been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, has showed that people with type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to suffer from hearing loss as compared with those who have no diabetes.
Sergei Kochkin, director at BHI, commented "A hearing check is invaluable in determining whether or not someone with diabetes does have a hearing loss and will help to ensure that they getting treatment they need."
The alert day is designed to offer education and guidance about the importance of checking for diabetes, as well as promoting the movement to Stop Diabetes through the use of the diabetes risk test.
