Cyclists to take part in 130km race for diabetes

Cyclists are to take part in a gruelling 130km cycle race to help raise funds for diabetes research and awareness. Around 400 riders are expected to participate in the Hammer race through the South Devon countryside, organised by the local cycling club Cycle Sport South Hams.

A quarter of the entry fees being donated to the national charity Diabetes UK to fund more research, as well as to help support sufferers and campaign for greater awareness of the condition.

There are still spaces available for the race if there are any cyclists who would be interested in taking part in the timed cyclosportive event, which is on Sunday, April 1 in Kingsbridge.

Event organiser Gareth Howells said that they were donating to Diabetes UK because he saw the difficulties experienced by diabetic children when working as a primary school teacher. He commented "Just before we started planning the Hammer I went on a school trip where I was responsible for several children with Type 1 diabetes. I saw first hand the difficulties which could face them with their condition and the careful planning that was needed to manage it."

Zoë Steer, fundraising manager for the South West for Diabetes UK, also pointed out "Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today and all the money raised will help fund our work to improve the lives of people with the condition and working towards a future free of diabetes."
