Health regulators America have approved the Accu-Chek Combo insulin delivery device from Swiss drugmaker Roche.
The interactive system for people with diabetes, which is already available in Europe and Asia, combines a blood glucose meter and insulin pump, which exchange data using wireless Bluetooth technology.
The meter enables users to test blood glucose levels quickly and efficiently, and also allows users to operate the insulin pump remotely. In addition, an easy-to-use bolus calculator (known in other pumps as a bolus wizard or advisor) provides support in determining the right insulin dose.
Other benefits of the Accu-Chek Combo include flexibility to adjust the basal rate to as low as 0.05 units per hour, and an insulin cartridge that holds up to 315 units of insulin – the largest capacity among pumps available in the US market.
“This new system is designed to support insulin pump patients in managing diabetes easily and discreetly in their everyday life,” Roche said in a statement.
The product is the second device under Roche’s Accu-Check brand to win approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this year, and is expected to go on sale in States later this year.
