Is diabetes really the hidden killer?

A Panorama documentary aired last night on the BBC, titled "Diabetes: The Hidden Killer." It discussed the damage that type 2 diabetes is causing to millions of people across the UK - but it didn't propose any answers.

Arguably, the documentary relied heavily on the 'shock factor' - showcasing extreme cases which, coupled with the lack of answers given, painted a dark and dismal prospect for people with type 2 diabetes.

There are answers, and life isn't dark and dismal. Type 2 diabetes does not have to be a progressive chronic disease. With effective, lifestyle changes, knowing what to change and how to change it, people can greatly reduce the risks of complications, reduce the need for medication, and can even lead to diabetes remission.

The documentary, aired on the BBC at primetime, failed to look at dietary changes, and instead talked about calorie reduction, and how people struggle to adhere to small-portion diets, rather than changing to more sustainable, low GI changes.

After six months of sticking to the Low Carb Program, people lose an average of 12kg and improve HbA1c by 1.1%, just by making changes that reduce their glucose intake.

Diabetes, no matter what type, doesn't have to be a secret killer.

What does the diabetes community say?

Another major oversight of the Panorama documentary is the lack of focus on type 1 diabetes. Diabetes types are very different, and focusing on one but not the other blurs the distinction between the two. The differences between the types of diabetes often gets overlooked in the media. Check out the forum and see what the community had to say about the documentary.
