Is butter linked to heart disease?

Despite being the leading cause of death in the UK, there is still a lot to learn about heart disease.

People with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing heart disease, but keeping good control of blood sugar levels, weight and blood pressure can be crucial in lowering this risk.

For decades, butter and saturated fat has been charged with being a cause of heart disease and an early death. However, new research shows no clear signs of butter being associated with heart disease or mortality risks.

The idea that saturated fat is linked with heart disease remains a very persistent belief despite the fact that the evidence supporting the notion has been shown to be grounded on very little fact.

Whilst modern research is absolving saturated fat of blame, body fat is a different story. This week’s news shows that overweight children are facing increased risks of heart disease and other serious health complications.

This week is Childhood Obesity Awareness week 2016 and at Diabetes.co.uk, the matter is close to our hearts as we feel that, with the right information, many children can improve their health and reduce their risk of developing diabetes.

The latest figures show that one in three children are overweight or obese and this has led to a unique 21st century phenomenon in which children are developing type 2 diabetes. A recent national audit showed that more than 500 children in England and Wales have developed type 2 diabetes.

Also this week, a report found that the NHS spent over £900 million on diabetes drugs in 2015. However, the report adds that the NHS could actually save millions of pounds if it focused on truly healthy strategies to reduce dependence on diabetes medication prescriptions.
