“Eyes on Diabetes” this World Diabetes Day

Almost half of all adults living with diabetes are unaware of the condition. That’s why the theme of this year’s World Diabetes Day (Monday 14 November) is “Eyes on Diabetes”.

As part of the campaign, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has called for greater worldwide type 2 diabetes screening and to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.

A new proposal from the NHS could see sugary drinks banned from vending machines in hospitals. The move is designed to tackle rising rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the UK and combat child dental decay.

"I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2009 and ignored it for a long time until my wake-up call in a recent six-monthly check up. My HbA1c and triglyceride results had markedly deteriorated and after checking my weight I was horrified! I started researching options using the Diabetes.co.uk website in mid-November and came across the Low Carb Program. In six months I’ve lost 16.7 kilos, taking me from a BMI of 28 into a normal range of 22.3. I feel much better now; I’m nowhere near as tired or hungry as I was before and have much more energy!"
