The app that predicts hypos, type 1 symptoms in the red book, and which breads contain the most carbs |

Good news for type 1s this week - we've had technological breakthroughs, successful petitions, and much more in between.
Medtronic and IBM are collaborating on app which uses the knowledge of IBM's Watson supercomputer to predict hypoglycemia three hours in advance. How? By using Watson's astonishing analytical capacities. You input all your data, from exercise to diet to insulin regimen, and let Watson do its thing. So far, it's been pretty successful.
Back in August, we reported on a petition to include the symptoms of type 1 diabetes in the "red book" given to new parents by the NHS. It's a wonderful idea. Because so few parents know the symptoms of type 1, it's often not diagnosed until the very serious onset of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Anyway, that petition recently hit 10,000 signatures, which means it's guaranteed a response from the government. Watch this space.
The recent calls for a cross-party commission to examine the future of the NHS - led by Norman Lamb MP and NHS Survival - are gathering speed. We fully support it. The NHS is a wonderful institution, but it needs to adjust in order to meet today's healthcare problems. You can read our position statement on the subject here, and vote in our poll here.
And finally, for the carb-counters: do you know how much carbohydrate is in a particular loaf of bread? You can read our comprehensive list here.
