Diabetes Week 2016: #facesofdiabetes, Diabetes Heroes and Dr David Cavan Q&A

Sunday marked the beginning of the annual Diabetes Week, which runs until Saturday June 18, and this year’s theme is about setting the record straight about diabetes.

As part of our #facesofdiabetes campaign, we are asking you to upload your photo, and show the world what diabetes really looks like. Take a look at our Faces of Diabetes 2016 photo album here.

Throughout the week, we’ll be posting a series of videos aimed at tackling some diabetes myths. In our first video, we asked is diabetes only treated by insulin injection?

One man who helped change the way type 2 diabetes was viewed is Dr David Cavan, author of Reverse Your Diabetes: The Step-by-Step Plan to Take Control of Type 2 Diabetes.

On Thursday June 16, Diabetes.co.uk will be holding a live Q&A with Dr Cavan between 7pm-8pm (1900-2000). You can either post questions in advance on the Diabetes Forum, or post them to our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Dr Cavan’s research also involved the intensive management of type 1 diabetes using multiple injections and pump therapy, and the development of self-management education programmes, such as BERTIE (for people with type 1 diabetes) and the BDEC e-learning programme.

To commemorate Diabetes Week, we wrote about 5 diabetes heroes of 2016 who have achieved impressive accomplishments within various aspects of diabetes management. One of these was Dr David Unwin, who became the first GP to be named the NHS Innovator of the Year.

Can I re-use needles?
Re-using needles is not recommended for a number of reasons which include the fact that re-used needles are more likely to hurt, there’s a chance small parts of the needle could break off inside the skin. Re-using needles can also increase the chance of developing lumpy skin.

Emergencies
Emergencies can happen. If you are at risk of very high or too low sugar levels, it’s important that those around you know how to respond, including whether an ambulance is needed and what can be done before the emergency services arrive.

What test was used for your diagnosis?
Forum member rosserk has started a discussion that’s proving quite popular.

“Can I ask the good people on this forum if they were diagnosed using a testing method other than HbA1c?”

Most people had the fasting random test or random plasma glucose test. Have a read and share your experiences of diagnosis.
