The race for faster insulin, avoiding pain when injecting + 48% want to stay

The race for faster insulin is on. At the American Diabetes Association’s 76th annual Scientific Sessions, Novo Nordisk unveiled a study showing results from trials into a new, faster-acting version of NovoRapid that they have developed.

The insulin resulted in lower blood glucose levels after meals for and this corresponded to a modest reduction in HbA1c levels for people with type 1 diabetes too.

Novo Nordisk are not the only insulin manufacturer to be working on quicker forms of insulin. Eli Lilly, the company that makes Humalog, has been working on an enhanced version of its insulin. Sanofi, which makes Apidra, has already received US approval for its own ultra-rapid-acting insulin, which is inhaled rather than injected.

Type 1 diabetes treatment is a hot topic among the diabetes community this year following a news report in late-2015 that a nine-year-old boy with type 1 diabetes was able to come off insulin injections for 19 months by following a Paleolithic ketogenic diet.

Many community members attributed this success to a honeymoon period, but was this really the case? We spoke to Hungarian physician Dr. Csaba Tóth about what the findings really meant.

Is my blood sugar level normal?
A number of factors can affect blood sugar levels, including: your activity levels, your carbohydrate intake, stress and illness, alcohol consumption, missing a medication dose and/or missing an insulin injection.

Check your blood sugar levels and see whether they are in the range according to the NICE recommendations for type 1 & type 2 diabetes.

It is useful to know how soon after injecting your insulin begins to work, when it hits the peak of its blood sugar lowering activity and how long the insulin stays active in the body for. See our Insulin Actions and Durations page for a guide on how quickly different types of insulin act.
