Diet has been a big talking point in this week’s news, with beer, fructose and omega-3 fatty acids among the topics discussed in relation to diabetes.
One of the more eye-catching news stories was the research that suggested a compound found in beer and hops could improve management of blood glucose levels.
Researchers also demonstrated that this compound, known as xanthohumol, could reduce cholesterol and weight gain.
Fructose has also been widely reported on, with two studies investigating the negative effects it has on the body.
In the first study, University of California scientists found a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids (found in foods such as wild salmon, walnuts, flaxseed, fruits and vegetables) could counteract the effect fructose has on metabolism and brain function.
In the second study, researchers warned that eating too much sugar during pregnancy could increase the risk of an unborn child developing heart disease later in life.
We also published two brand new In-Depth features this week. Ben looked at the recent discovery of a forgotten major clinical trial from the 1960s and Camille investigated if abnormal thyroid function can affect the course of diabetes. |
