Could there be a type 4 diabetes?
Last week was all about the cutting edge. We were treated to news of an alternative to insulin injections, and heard about a fascinating new purpose for Viagra. We were also introduced to type 4 diabetes.

Let’s start with type 4 diabetes, then. There have been calls from the Salk Institute, United States, for this to be made a new classification of diabetes. This follows research that found diabetes or insulin resistance in older mice has a different cellular cause than diabetes caused by obesity.

Regarding the insulin injection alternative - an insulin pill is currently being developed at the University of California Santa Barbara could provide an alternative to insulin injections.

Meanwhile, Viagra (the market name of sildenafil) reportedly increases insulin sensitivity in people with prediabetes.

In our regular feature “You asked”, Kurt this week answered “What’s the best place to inject insulin?” after the question was sent in on the Diabetes Forum.
