What does Brexit actually mean for us?

The verdict has fallen on the UK's membership to the European Union. Brits woke up on Friday only to find a wounded economy, the prime minister's resignation, and rising concerns of healthcare professionals warning about the fallout of an EU exit on the UK's health and science sector.

In the lead-up to this landmark day for Britain, the reputed BMJ medical journal as well as NHS consultants had taken a stance against a Brexit, and urged the UK to remain in the European Union to guarantee the NHS better prospects.

Last week, we investigated What would the UK leaving the EU mean for people with diabetes? and Camille compiled a factual review on Brexit and diabetes healthcare.

Following the country's decision to leave the EU, the NHS's top priority will be to adapt to the new circumstances and continue to deliver high quality services for patients.

With type 2 diabetes prevelance in the UK expected to reach 4 million by 2020 and warnings that more needs to be done to tackle obesity, the costly health crisis and providing robust protection to UK patients with diabetes demands economic growth and well-coordinated efforts between healthcare providers.

But the vote to leave the EU could lead the economy to go into a tailspin. The ire of many was drawn after it was confirmed that Brexit did not mean an extra £350m a week for the NHS as previously claimed.

“The NHS is a wonderful institution, but big changes are needed”. The only way forward, some MPs have argued, is to focus on quality and culture in the NHS.

And finally, with the Brexit still very much in the public focus, our guides to employment, benefits and prescriptions have all been trending since Thursday.

Have a great day,

PS. Help Carina62, who just asked whether anyone takes Co-enzyme Q10?
