One fifth of US diabetics are African-American

According to recent reports in the diabetes news, as many as 3 million African-Americans are suffering from diabetes in the USA, representing around 17 per cent of all US diabetics.

The research, conducted by GfK Market Measures’ Roper Global Diabetes Group, indicates that this figure is also on the rise.

Type 2 diabetes risk increased by antidepressants

According to a researcher at the University of Alberta, those people that take particular medication for depression could be facing a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

A study published in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice reportedly drew parallels between history of depression and diabetes risk. Lauren Brown, the researcher behind the study, analysed the results of just under 2,500 people.

The more antidepressant medication a person took, Brown found, the more likely they were to develop type 2 diabetes.

Wales on the brink of diabetes epidemic

Each year thousands of people in Wales are unaware that they have developed Type 2 diabetes, a new study has revealed. Research carried out by Swansea University School of Medicine has found as many as seven thousand people in the country could be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes each year.
