At last, hot weather and sunshine, and a chance to spend some time outdoors. Diabetes.co.uk has had a busy month, with the forum continuing to grow and the community giving genuine help to each other.

It’s worth remembering that each case is different, and that medical advice should always be sought in an emergency, but as a free space in which people can help each other, we are quite proud of the forum. We hope that you enjoy it too!

Chocolate could lower diabetes heart disease risks

According to a recent study conducted by the University of East Anglia, taking a specific type of chocolate high in flavonoids could be able to cut the risk of heart disease amongst diabetic women.

A team of female volunteers, all of whom will be postmenopausal women who have type 2 diabetes, will be given a bar of chocolate each day for a year. The chocolate will be similar to Cocoa, a type of chocolate rich in flavonoids.

According to recent reports by the World Health Organisation, as many as 80 per cent of global diabetics live in the developing world.

The WHO report that diabetes could soar by 150% in the next quarter of a century, leading to massive healthcare problems in these nations.

Diabetes linked to Alzheimer’s disease

A study conducted in Sweden indicates that men who develop type 2 diabetes in the middle of their life increase their chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease as they become older.

A research team that tracked men with abnormal levels of insulin from age 50 checked back in 32 years later only to find significant increases in Alzheimer's disease amongst those with low insulin secretion capability.
