Christmas eating ideas for diabetics

Christmas in the Western world can be a tough time for diabetics. The temptation is always there to eat unhealthy food in large quantities. However, with a bit of careful preparation, there is no reason why as a diabetic you can not enjoy Christmas food just as much as anyone else.

A diet recommended for diabetics is likely to be almost the same as a diet recommended for anyone concerned with eating healthily. The foods you eat will ideally be low in refined salts, fats, and sugars.

Keeping your fruit and vegetable intake up is essential; they are essential components of every meal. To keep blood glucose level constant during the day, a meal should incorporate starchy carbohydrate food.

However, you do not need to exclude certain foods purely because you are diabetic; it is simply a case of moderation.

If you are putting together a Christmas hamper, either for yourself as a diabetic, or for someone else who is diabetic, then it could be worth bearing some of the following food ideas in mind:

  • Artificial sweeteners (such as Canderel)
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Canned fruit and vegetables
  • Christmas Cake (without icing), mince pies (in moderation), Christmas pudding (small)
  • Cocoa
  • Dried herbs to flavour food
  • Fresh and dried fruits, low-sugar fruit conserves or jams
  • Gherkins and other pickled vegetables
  • Grains and pulses (Lentils, Buckwheat, Cous Cous, etc.)
  • Olive oil and nut oil
  • Pasta and rice – different varieties to make it more interesting
  • Pasta sauces
  • Savoury biscuits and shortbread, fruit loaf, oatcakes, ginger biscuits
  • Soups with high vegetable content
  • Unsalted nuts
  • Wine
