Eli Lilly and company, one of several major players in the insulin industry, has launched a new insulin product. Humalog Mix 50/50 is a pre-mixed insulin product which controls high blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Lilly produces a range of different long, intermediate, short and rapid-acting insulin products, which a diabetic can incorporate into their insulin regime.
Humalog Mix 50/50 is available in an easy-to-use pen delivery device in the United States, and is made up of 50 per cent insulin lispro protamine suspension and 50% insulin lispro injection. The aim of the new insulin mixture is to give diabetics blood sugar control in between meals, and also provide a high concentration of fast-acting insulin around mealtimes. The humalog aspect of the mixture lowers blood sugar at a faster rate than normal human insulin, and may be used pre-prandially (before a meal) to control blood sugar efficiently.
Balancing meals and a regular, healthy diet can be one of the most difficult aspects of being a diabetic, and this new type of insulin could be useful for the diabetic who is too busy to 100 per cent accurately control what they eat. The drug, which Lilly are calling a ‘new solution’ is just one of several new diabetes products by the company. Byetta, another Lilly product, is securing a decent market share.
