A new study indicates that those patients suffering type 2 diabetes in conjunction with high blood pressure levels could be helped by taking ACE inhibitors. ACE (Angiotension-converting-enzyme) inhibitors serve to lower blood pressure levels, and could have protective effects on type 2 diabetes.
Controlling hypertensio, also known as high blood pressure, has a positive effect on type 2 diabetes, according to study results . The study, known as the BENEDICT trial, focused on over 1000 type 2 diabetic with hypertension. Using ACE inhibitors prevented processes leading to kidney disease amongst the study group.
Results of the study indicate that blood pressure reduction was crucial to thwarting the development of kidney damage amongst type 2 diabetics . The most effective agent was found to be Veratra, a key in reducing systolic blood pressure. Results were published in December issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Kidney disease is one of the major complications caused by diabetes, and type 2 diabetes is one of the principal causes of kidney disease. When diabetes is present in the body for long periods of time, numerous complications can occur, including nerve damage, gum disease, heart disease and eye problems.
