Many supplements are thought to affect diabetes in a positive manner. Taking a daily supplement of extracts from milk thistle has been found to have a significant impact on fasting glucose levels. The study was carried out in Ira, and is published in a reputed journal.
A team at the Institute of Medicinal Plants in Tehra, Iran carried out the research. According to the lead author, Fallah Huseini: “The results are very encouraging, and we now need to do further large multi-centre studies .”
The researchers analysed data from a team of 51 people, all of whom had type 2 diabetes. Using milk thistle and a placebo, the team proved the influence of the supplement. Milk thistle (Silybum Marianum) has been used in Europe for centuries.
The research was published in the journal Phytotherapy Research and indicates clear proof of the effect of milk thistle. Although the actual mechanism behind the effects is not clear, further studies should reveal this. Huseini concluded: “silymarin could play an important role [against] type II diabetes.”
