Researchers have uncovered a simple vitamin deficiency that could be the cause of diabetic side effects.
A team from Warwick University found that thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, was often expelled by diabetics at 15 times the rate of normal people. To glean their results, the team studied just under 100 people.
The team linked thiamine with heart disease and eye problems. The results of the study were published in the journal Diabetologia, and the experts concluded that diet supplements could help diabetic people. The lead researcher of the team, Professor Paul Thornalley, reportedly commented: “It is early days, but it could have a huge difference. Supplementing diets could be an effective way of minimising the risk of these complications.”
Diabetes UK, who helped to fund the study, reportedly said: “Around 80% of people with diabetes die of cardiovascular disease and diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the UK’s working age population.”
